Acetylcholine actions on skeletal muscle
THE CONTEXT
The skeletal muscle response to acetylcholine depends on how it reaches the muscle endplate.
Effects by route of administration
•
Iontophoretic application of acetylcholine to the muscle endplate
causes contraction of the muscle fibre.
•
Intraarterial injection of a high dose can
cause twitching and fasciculations.
•
Intravenous injection generally produces no skeletal muscle effect because acetylcholine is rapidly hydrolysed.
