CHOLINERGIC TRANSMISSION & CHOLINERGIC DRUGS
Additional pilocarpine uses and muscarine
THE CONTEXT
This passage
continues the discussion of pilocarpine as an ocular miotic and introduces muscarine as a mushroom toxin.
Pilocarpine
•
Initial ocular stinging and painful spasm of accommodation
are frequent adverse effects.
•
Pilocarpine
can counteract mydriatics after their use for testing refraction.
•
Alternating pilocarpine with mydriatics
can prevent or break adhesions of the iris with the lens or cornea.
•
It can act as a sialogogue, but the source states that no oral preparation is available.
Muscarine and mushroom poisoning
•
Muscarine
occurs in poisonous mushrooms, including Amanita muscaria and Inocybe species, and has only muscarinic actions.
•
Muscarine has toxicological importance but
is not used therapeutically.
•
At least three types of mushroom poisoning
are recognized according to the toxic principle present.
