Cholesteatoma and Chronic Otitis Media
Aetiology of tubotympanic disease
THE CONTEXT
Tubotympanic disease starts in childhood and
is therefore common in that age group.
Following acute otitis media
•
The disease
can be a sequela of acute otitis media, usually following an exanthematous fever and leaving a large central perforation.
Ascending infection
•
Infections
can ascend through the eustachian tube.
•
Infection from the tonsils, adenoids and infected sinuses may cause persistent or recurring otorrhoea.
Allergic contribution
•
Persistent mucoid otorrhoea sometimes results from allergy to ingestants such as milk, eggs and fish.
