Goitre can obstruct the trachea through displacement or compression, and haemorrhage can precipitate acute obstruction.
Mechanisms of obstruction
•
Tracheal obstruction may result from gross lateral displacement or compression in a lateral or anteroposterior plane by retrosternal extension of the goitre.
•
Haemorrhage into a nodule impacted in the thoracic inlet may cause acute respiratory obstruction.
