Atrial ectopic beats usually have little clinical consequence, but their ECG appearance, frequency and symptom burden guide assessment.
Symptoms and ECG
•
Atrial ectopic beats usually cause no symptoms but may feel like a missed beat or an abnormally strong beat.
•
The ECG shows a premature but otherwise normal QRS complex. If visible, the preceding P wave has a different morphology because atrial activation begins at an abnormal site.
Significance and treatment
•
Most atrial ectopic beats are of no consequence, although very frequent beats may herald atrial fibrillation.
•
Treatment is rarely necessary. β-blockers can be used when symptoms are intrusive.
