Atrial septal defect: imaging and percutaneous closure
THE CONTEXT
The target passage illustrates an atrial septal defect on transoesophageal echocardiography and explains how a percutaneous device seals it.
Echocardiographic appearance
•
Transoesophageal echocardiography shows the defect between the left and right atria.
•
Doppler colour-flow imaging demonstrates flow across the defect.
Percutaneous closure
•
The closure device
is delivered across the interatrial septum. A disc is deployed on each side to seal the defect.
