Birth injury: definition and assessment
THE CONTEXT
Birth injury includes impairment of body structure or function occurring during birth.
Scope
•
Complications of therapeutic or diagnostic procedures, such as amniocentesis or intrauterine transfusion, are excluded from birth injury.
Assessment and course
•
Examine every neonate with a birth injury for additional complications.
•
Most birth injuries
are temporary and self-limiting.
