Blood pool imaging: technique and measurements
THE CONTEXT
Blood pool imaging evaluates cardiac isotope distribution to measure ventricular function and assess chamber structure.
Procedure
•
Radioisotope-labelled blood cells
are injected intravenously.
•
After 4–5 minutes, a gamma camera evaluates isotope distribution in the heart at different phases of the cardiac cycle.
Information obtained
•
The assessment permits calculation of ventricular ejection fraction.
•
Blood pool imaging
can also assess the size and shape of cardiac chambers.
