Mitral stenosis is predominantly rheumatic, with calcific and congenital causes also described.

Mitral stenosis is almost always rheumatic in origin.

•

Heavy calcification of the mitral valve can cause stenosis in older people.

•

A rare congenital form of mitral stenosis also occurs.
