The extent of resection for thyrotoxicosis depends on patient, gland and surgical considerations.
Factors guiding resection

The size of the gland, the age of the patient and the experience of the surgeon influence the extent of resection.

The decision also considers minimising recurrent toxicity and the patient's wish to avoid postoperative thyroid replacement.
