Pediatrics
Newborn Care
Duration and practical delivery of kangaroo mother care
THE CONTEXT
Kangaroo mother care (
KMC
)
* is introduced gradually, with progression toward continuous skin-to-skin contact.
Duration and progression
•
Skin-to-skin contact should start gradually in the nursery, with a smooth transition from conventional care to continuous KMC.
•
Increase skin-to-skin contact gradually up to 24 hours daily, interrupted for changing diapers.
•
Avoid sessions shorter than one hour because frequent handling
may be stressful for the baby.
•
KMC
can continue in the postnatal ward after transfer from the NICU.
Examples of delivery
•
The illustrated examples include mothers and fathers providing KMC, using a front-open gown and shawl or a KMC jacket.
•
The examples also show twins receiving KMC and KMC during oxygen therapy, ventilation, and CPAP support.
