Study note

ECG recording for suspected arrhythmias

THE CONTEXT
Capturing the cardiac rhythm during symptoms is central to diagnosing suspected arrhythmias.

Recording during symptoms

•
A 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) taken during symptoms* is usually diagnostic.
•
When arrhythmias are intermittent and the resting ECG is normal, ambulatory or patient-activated ECG recording should be used to try to capture the abnormal rhythm.
•
Many smart watches can record a single-lead ECG and provide a useful adjunct in clinical practice.
