Pediatrics
Newborn Care
Eligibility for kangaroo mother care
THE CONTEXT
Eligibility for kangaroo mother care (
KMC
) depends on the infant's weight and clinical stability, together with maternal health and hygiene.
Infant eligibility
•
Stable LBW neonates below 2000 g
are eligible for KMC.
•
Infants weighing 2000–2499 g
can also receive KMC, depending on the family's willingness.
•
Sick neonates need care under radiant warmers or incubators and should receive KMC once hemodynamically stable.
•
During recovery, short KMC sessions can be performed while the infant receives intravenous fluids, oxygen therapy, or CPAP.
Maternal eligibility
•
Mothers
can provide KMC irrespective of age, parity, education, culture, and religion.
•
Mothers should be free from significant illness and maintain good hygiene.
