THE CONTEXT
Short-course treatment requires the listed microbiological, cardiac and clinical conditions to be satisfied.
Infection and susceptibility requirements
•
The infection must involve a native valve.
•
The organism's minimum inhibitory concentration must be ≤0.125 mg/L.
Absence of adverse features
•
Heart failure, aortic regurgitation and conduction defects must be absent because they are adverse prognostic factors.
•
There must be no evidence of thromboembolic disease.
•
There must be no vegetation larger than 5 mm in diameter.
Treatment response
•
A clinical response must occur within 7 days.
