Pediatrics
Newborn Care
Environmental causes of neonatal temperature disorders
THE CONTEXT
Neonatal hypothermia and hyperthermia
can reflect environmental exposure or severe underlying illness.
Hypothermia
•
Low ambient temperature, cold surfaces, and cold air can cause hypothermia.
•
Being wet or inadequately clothed can also
cause hypothermia.
Hyperthermia
•
Warm environments, including summer conditions and direct sun exposure, can cause hyperthermia.
•
Overheating in an incubator or under a radiant warmer can
cause hyperthermia.
Clinical significance
•
Both hypothermia and hyperthermia
can indicate severe underlying illness.
