Pediatrics
Newborn Care
Evaluation after initial neonatal resuscitation steps
THE CONTEXT
After initial steps, reassessment focuses on respiration, heart rate, and color or oxygen saturation.
Parameters and assessment methods
•
Assess respiration by observing chest movements.
•
Assess heart rate by auscultating the heart or palpating umbilical cord pulsations.
•
Count beats or pulsations for 6 seconds and multiply by 10 to obtain the heart rate per minute; 14 beats in 6 seconds corresponds to 140/minute.
•
Evaluate color or measure oxygen saturation using pulse oximetry.
