Pediatrics
Newborn Care
Foremilk, hindmilk, and switching breasts
THE CONTEXT
Milk secreted at the beginning and later portions of a feed serves complementary nutritional needs.
Milk during a feed
•
Foremilk
is secreted at the start of a feed. It is watery and high in proteins, sugar, vitamins, and minerals, and quenches the baby's thirst.
•
Hindmilk comes later and
is richer in fat, providing more energy and a sense of satiety.
Feeding practice
•
The neonate needs both foremilk and hindmilk for optimum growth. Allow the neonate to empty one breast before switching to the other.
