Pediatrics
Newborn Care
Four mechanisms of neonatal heat loss
THE CONTEXT
Newborns lose heat through radiation, convection, conduction, and evaporation.
Mechanisms
•
Radiation transfers heat to the surrounding environment without direct contact with the baby.
•
Convection transfers heat to air flowing around the baby.
•
Conduction transfers heat to substances in direct contact with the baby.
•
Evaporation
causes heat loss as fluid and moisture evaporate from the baby’s skin.
