Functions of neuronal nicotinic receptors
THE CONTEXT
The neuronal nicotinic receptor entry describes responses in autonomic ganglia, the adrenal medulla and the central nervous system.
Responses by site
•
In autonomic ganglia, depolarization leads to a postganglionic impulse.
•
In the adrenal medulla, neuronal nicotinic receptors mediate catecholamine release.
•
In the central nervous system, their effects include site-specific excitation or inhibition.
Channel structure
•
These receptors
have an intrinsic ion channel and a pentameric structure. Each subunit has four transmembrane segments.
