Study note

Harmful traditional newborn practices and timing of discharge

THE CONTEXT
Newborn counseling should address discouraged traditional practices and the appropriate duration of facility-based observation after birth.

Practices to discourage

•
Strongly discourage applying kajal or surma to the eyes, putting oil in the ears, and applying cow dung to the umbilical cord.

Duration of hospital stay

•
A normal neonate should stay in the health facility for at least 24 hours, preferably 48 hours.
•
Smaller neonates and those with feeding problems or sickness should remain in hospital as required.
