Higher vitamin C intake: saturation and possible benefits
THE CONTEXT
The passage distinguishes saturation of vitamin C metabolism from its effects within the gut and the limited evidence concerning the common cold.
Metabolic saturation
•
At intakes above about 100 mg/day, the body's capacity to metabolize vitamin C is saturated, and further intake is excreted in urine.
Iron absorption
•
Vitamin C enhances inorganic iron absorption, and this effect depends on its presence in the gut.
•
Increased intake
may therefore be beneficial, and vitamin C is frequently prescribed with iron supplements to treat iron deficiency anemia.
Common cold
•
There
is very little good evidence that high doses of vitamin C prevent the common cold.
•
High doses
may reduce the duration and severity of symptoms.
