Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy
Hospital admission, positioning and rest in pre-eclampsia
THE CONTEXT
Hospital admission and rest support continued evaluation and treatment of the patient with pre-eclampsia.
Positioning during rest
•
While in bed, the patient should remain in the left lateral position as much as possible to lessen the effects of vena caval compression.
Effects and extent of rest
•
Rest increases renal blood flow and promotes diuresis.
•
Rest increases uterine blood flow and improves placental perfusion.
•
Rest reduces blood pressure, but complete bed rest is not essential.
