Study note

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: structural characteristics

THE CONTEXT
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy involves inappropriate left ventricular hypertrophy with abnormal myocardial fibre arrangement and fibrosis.

Prevalence and myocardial changes

•
Prevalence: The condition affects around 1 in 500 people worldwide, with variation between populations.
•
Myocardial changes: Inappropriate left ventricular hypertrophy occurs with myocardial fibre malalignment and fibrosis.

Distribution of hypertrophy

•
Generalised hypertrophy: Hypertrophy may involve the heart more broadly.
•
Asymmetric septal hypertrophy: Hypertrophy may be largely confined to the interventricular septum; other regions can also be involved.
•
Apical variant: Apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is common in the Far East.
