Study note

Investigations in mitral regurgitation

THE CONTEXT
Investigation assesses regurgitation severity, valve and papillary muscle function, associated rhythm changes and suitability for surgery.

Echocardiography

•
Echocardiography is a pivotal investigation.
•
Doppler assesses regurgitation severity, and echocardiography may provide information on papillary muscle function and valve prolapse.

Electrocardiography and catheterisation

•
An electrocardiogram should be performed and commonly shows atrial fibrillation due to atrial dilatation.
•
Cardiac catheterisation is indicated when surgery is being considered.
