Leadless pacemakers and non-transvenous defibrillators
THE CONTEXT
These implantable devices
have alternative arrangements associated with a lower likelihood of infection.
Leadless pacemakers
•
Leadless pacemakers
are very small devices implanted into the trabeculated right ventricular septum.
•
They
are considerably less likely to become infected and provide ventricular pacing only.
Non-transvenous implantable cardiac defibrillators
•
Defibrillation leads
are placed above or underneath the sternum, with the generator outside the sternum.
•
These devices
have no intravascular components, making infection and resulting bacteraemia less likely.
