Surgery
The thyroid gland
Limited role of core biopsy in thyroid masses
THE CONTEXT
Core biopsy
has selected diagnostic uses in thyroid disease despite a procedure-related bleeding risk.
Risk and selected indications
•
Core biopsy
is rarely indicated in thyroid masses because the vascular thyroid gland carries a risk of postprocedure haemorrhage.
•
It can help rapidly diagnose widely invasive malignant disease, such as anaplastic carcinoma.
•
It can also be useful in diagnosing lymphadenopathy.
