Surgery
The thyroid gland
Management of large toxic nodular goitre
THE CONTEXT
Goitre size and its response to nonsurgical treatment influence management of toxic nodular goitre.
Size and treatment response
•
Toxic nodular goitre
is often large and uncomfortable, and it can enlarge further with antithyroid drugs.
•
Compared with diffuse toxic goitre, large toxic nodular goitres respond less well and less rapidly to radioiodine or antithyroid drugs.
Preferred management
•
Large toxic nodular goitres should be treated surgically.
