Monitoring follows edema, weight, fluid balance, laboratory findings, and fetal wellbeing; improvement is reflected by favorable clinical and urinary changes.
Clinical and urinary monitoring
•
Assess the state of edema, record weight daily, and monitor fluid intake and urinary output.
•
Examine urine for protein daily. If protein is present, estimate its amount in a 24-hour urine collection.
•
Perform ophthalmoscopic examination on admission and repeat it if necessary.
Blood tests and fetal assessment
•
Check hematocrit, platelet count, uric acid, creatinine, liver enzymes (AST, ALT, LDH), and the coagulation profile at least weekly.
•
Fetal wellbeing assessment includes fetal growth profiling, NST or BPP, and Doppler studies.
Favorable signs
•
Blood pressure control with subsiding edema is favorable.
•
Increasing urinary output with diminishing proteinuria is favorable.
