Study note

Meaning and clinical types of thyrotoxicosis

THE CONTEXT
Thyrotoxicosis is retained as a term because raised circulating thyroid hormones do not explain every manifestation of the disease.

Terminology

•
Hyperthyroidism describes symptoms due to raised circulating thyroid hormone levels, but it is not responsible for all disease manifestations.

Clinical types

•
The listed clinical types are diffuse toxic goitre (Graves’ disease), toxic nodular goitre, toxic nodule and hyperthyroidism due to rarer causes.
