THE CONTEXT
Medical management of peripheral arterial disease combines lifestyle measures, antiplatelet and statin therapy, and treatment of coexisting disease.

Core measures

•
Encourage smoking cessation where applicable and regular exercise.
•
Use antiplatelet therapy with low-dose aspirin or clopidogrel, together with statin therapy.
•
Treat coexisting disease such as diabetes, hypertension or polycythaemia.
•
Low-dose factor Xa inhibition with rivaroxaban is also mentioned.
