Milk options when maternal illness prevents breastfeeding

THE CONTEXT

Alternative milk options are provided for the rare circumstances in which the mother is sick or breastfeeding is contraindicated.

Pasteurized donor human milk is an option.

•

Preterm formula is an option for very-low-birth-weight infants.

•

Term formula is an option for infants weighing 1500 g or more at birth.

•

Exclusive breastfeeding should be started once the mother becomes stable or the contraindication resolves.
