Study note

Neonatal anthropometry: measurement and reference values

THE CONTEXT
Neonatal anthropometry includes weight, length, head and chest circumferences, and calculation of the ponderal index.

Measurement methods

•
Measure weight using a scale with 10 g sensitivity and length using an infantometer.
•
Measure head circumference with a soft non-stretchable tape passing just above the eyebrows and around the occiput.
•
Measure chest circumference at the level of the nipples.

Ponderal index and term measurements

•
Ponderal index equals weight in grams multiplied by 100, divided by the cube of length in centimetres.
•
Indian neonates born at term have an approximate mean birth weight of 2900 g.
•
Their birth length is about 50 cm, and head circumference is about 33–37 cm.
