Pediatrics
Newborn Care
Neonatal breast engorgement, erythema toxicum, and pyoderma
THE CONTEXT
This passage distinguishes self-resolving neonatal findings from pus-filled lesions caused by local skin infection.
Breast engorgement
•
Neonatal breast engorgement resolves spontaneously in a few days.
•
Do not squeeze or massage engorged breasts, because this may cause soreness and infection.
Erythema toxicum
•
Erythema toxicum begins on day two or three of life.
•
The lesions are maculopapular with an erythematous base and
occur over the trunk and face.
•
These lesions
are sterile, contain eosinophils, and resolve spontaneously.
Pyoderma
•
Pyoderma consists of pus-filled lesions caused by local skin infection.
•
Lesions commonly
occur in creases where dirt accumulates, such as the thigh fold and back of the neck.
