Neonatal resuscitation: airway, breathing, circulation, and preparation
THE CONTEXT
Neonatal resuscitation support addresses airway patency, breathing, and circulation. Preparation includes timely team attendance and review of relevant birth information.
Airway
•
Position the infant and clear the airway if required by wiping or suctioning the mouth and nose.
•
Insert an endotracheal tube if necessary to ensure an open airway.
Breathing and circulation
•
Use tactile stimulation to initiate breathing. Provide positive-pressure breaths with a bag and mask or a bag and endotracheal tube as necessary.
•
Support circulation with chest compressions and medications as indicated.
Preparation before birth
•
The resuscitation team should reach the birthing room in time, interact with the obstetric and anesthesia teams, and review risk factors for neonatal asphyxia.
•
Ask about gestation, whether the amniotic fluid is clear or meconium-stained, additional risk factors, and the plan for umbilical cord management.
