CHOLINERGIC TRANSMISSION & CHOLINERGIC DRUGS
Nicotinic actions of acetylcholine on autonomic ganglia
THE CONTEXT
Acetylcholine stimulates autonomic ganglia, with this effect becoming evident at higher doses.
Ganglionic stimulation and cardiovascular response
•
Both sympathetic and parasympathetic ganglia
are stimulated.
•
A high dose of acetylcholine administered after atropine produces tachycardia and a rise in blood pressure.
•
This cardiovascular response results from sympathetic ganglion stimulation and catecholamine release.
