Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy
Normal trophoblast invasion and spiral arteriole remodeling
THE CONTEXT
Normal endovascular trophoblast invasion remodels the spiral arterioles of the uteroplacental bed.
Extent and structural effects
•
The second wave of trophoblast invasion at 16–18 weeks
extends to the myometrial segments.
•
The remodeling process replaces the endothelial lining and muscular arterial wall with fibrinoid formation.
•
The spiral arterioles become distended, tortuous, and funnel shaped.
