Study note

Ongoing neonatal care: cord care, breastfeeding, and sleep position

THE CONTEXT
Care beyond the initial hours includes keeping the umbilical stump clean and dry, maintaining breastfeeding, and using the recommended sleep position.

Umbilical stump care

•
Keep the stump dry without applying any substance.
•
Fold the nappy well below the stump to prevent contamination.
•
In healthy term neonates, the cord falls off in 7–10 days.

Breastfeeding support

•
Use a proactive approach to initiate and maintain breastfeeding, and explain its benefits to the family.

Sleep position

•
Healthy term newborns should sleep supine. Prone sleeping has been linked to sudden infant death syndrome.
