Opening snap in mitral stenosis

THE CONTEXT
An opening snap is an added heart sound associated with opening of stenosed mitral valve leaflets.

Characteristics and severity

•
The opening snap occurs early in diastole and is high-pitched and brief.
•
It moves closer to the second heart sound (S2) as mitral stenosis becomes more severe.
•
It may be absent in calcific mitral stenosis.
