Physiological vulnerabilities in neonatal jaundice
THE CONTEXT
The neonatal jaundice passage lists factors affecting bilirubin handling and the risk of neurological injury.
Relevant factors
•
Red blood cell volume
is larger relative to body weight.
•
Hepatic enzymes and hepatic excretory capacity
are immature.
•
An immature blood–brain barrier increases the risk of bilirubin encephalopathy.
