THE CONTEXT
Low-birth-weight neonates have several vulnerabilities that require special attention during resuscitation.
Asphyxia, ventilation, and bleeding
•
A compromised intrauterine environment is associated with higher chances of perinatal asphyxia.
•
Preterm neonates have immature lungs that may be more difficult to ventilate.
•
Immature blood vessels in the brain are prone to bleeding.
Heat loss and circulating volume
•
Thin skin and a large surface area contribute to rapid heat loss.
•
Small blood volume increases the risk of hypovolemic shock.
