Study note

Raynaud syndrome: usual course and symptom management

THE CONTEXT
The passage contrasts the usual uncomplicated disorder in young women with more severe Raynaud syndrome associated with connective tissue disease.

Usual presentation and course

•
The common disorder affects 5%–10% of young women aged 15–30 years in temperate climates.
•
The uncomplicated disorder does not progress to ulceration or infarction, and significant pain is unusual.
•
The underlying cause is unclear, and no investigation is necessary for the usual uncomplicated presentation.
•
More severe Raynaud syndrome associated with connective tissue disease can occur with digital ulceration.

Management

•
Reassure the patient and advise avoidance of cold exposure.
•
Usually no additional treatment is required; nifedipine may help when symptoms are troublesome.
