Sinus bradycardia: significance and treatment
THE CONTEXT
Sinus bradycardia can
occur in healthy people; treatment depends on whether symptoms are present and whether they recur or persist.
Physiological and asymptomatic bradycardia
•
Sinus bradycardia may occur in healthy people at rest and
is common in athletes.
•
Asymptomatic sinus bradycardia requires no treatment.
Symptomatic bradycardia
•
Symptomatic sinus bradycardia
may develop acutely during myocardial infarction and can be treated with intravenous atropine, 0.6–1.2 mg.
•
Permanent pacemaker implantation should be considered for recurrent or persistent symptomatic sinus bradycardia.
