Study note

Subscapular and circumflex scapular arteries

THE CONTEXT
The subscapular artery is the largest branch of the axillary artery and gives off the circumflex scapular artery.

Subscapular artery

•
The subscapular artery arises from the third part of the axillary artery.
•
It runs along the lower border of subscapularis and terminates near the inferior angle of the scapula.
•
It supplies latissimus dorsi and serratus anterior.

Circumflex scapular branch

•
The circumflex scapular artery is larger than the continuation of the main subscapular artery.
•
It passes through the upper triangular intermuscular space and winds around the lateral border of the scapula between two slips of teres minor.
•
It gives branches to the subscapular and infraspinous fossae; both participate in the anastomoses around the scapula.
