Thyroid histology in hyperthyroidism

THE CONTEXT

Hyperthyroidism changes both the acinar epithelium and the appearance of thyroid colloid.

•

Normal thyroid acini have a cuboidal epithelial lining and contain homogeneous colloid.

•

The acini show hyperplasia and are lined by high columnar epithelium.

•

Many acini are empty; others contain vacuolated colloid with characteristic scalloping adjacent to the thyrocytes.
