Surgery
The thyroid gland
Toxic nodule: autonomy and suppression of surrounding tissue
THE CONTEXT
A toxic nodule is a solitary overactive nodule that may
occur within generalised nodularity or represent a true toxic adenoma.
Autonomous activity
•
The nodule
is autonomous, and its hypertrophy and hyperplasia are not due to TSH-RAb.
Effects on TSH and normal thyroid tissue
•
High circulating thyroid hormone levels suppress TSH secretion.
•
The normal thyroid tissue surrounding the nodule
is suppressed and inactive.
