Study note

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation

THE CONTEXT
Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI)* is an alternative to surgical aortic valve replacement, especially for aortic stenosis.

Procedure

•
The native valve remains in place and is compressed by a new bioprosthetic valve implanted within it.
•
The bioprosthetic valve is mounted on a large stent-like structure and delivered through a catheter inserted in the femoral artery.

Advantages

•
TAVI avoids sternotomy and is associated with a short recovery period.
•
It can be used in high-risk and otherwise inoperable patients and is better tolerated by older patients.

Complications

•
Reported complications include stroke in 2% and heart block requiring pacemaker implantation in 5%–15%.
