Transition from intravenous fluids to oral feeding
THE CONTEXT
Clinical stability guides the introduction of oral feeding in neonates receiving intravenous fluids.
Starting feeds and stopping intravenous fluids
•
Term LBW infants started on intravenous fluids because of sickness can be put on the breast once hemodynamically stable.
•
Neonates should receive oral feeding once stable to reduce the risk of healthcare-associated infection.
•
Intravenous fluids
can be stopped once oral feeds provide about two-thirds of the daily fluid requirement.
Intravenous care
•
Follow all asepsis precautions during insertion of an intravenous cannula and administration of fluids.
•
Inspect intravenous sites frequently.
