Study note

Tubercular otitis media: investigations supporting diagnosis

THE CONTEXT
Diagnosis is supported by examination of granulations, assessment for tuberculosis elsewhere and molecular testing of ear discharge.

Supporting investigations

•
Histopathological examination of granulations, chest X-ray and other evidence of tuberculosis in the body help confirm the diagnosis.

Early molecular diagnosis

•
DNA probe and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing of ear discharge can provide an early diagnosis in 3–7 days.
