Why heart disease may be recognised late
THE CONTEXT
Two features limit prompt recognition of developing heart disease: prolonged clinically silent disease and limited diversity of presenting symptoms.
Prolonged absence of symptoms
•
Heart disease
is often clinically silent for prolonged periods.
•
Coronary heart disease
can reach an advanced stage before the patient notices symptoms.
Overlap of symptoms
•
The diversity of symptoms attributable to heart disease
is limited, so different cardiac pathologies may frequently present with the same symptoms.
