Cytokine signals supporting B cell activation
THE CONTEXT
The passage describes cytokine production and the subsequent proliferation and differentiation of antigen-bound B cells.
Cytokine sources
•
The APC produces interleukin-1 (
IL-1
).
•
The activated helper T cell produces interleukin-2 and other cytokines required for B cell stimulation, including IL-4, IL-5 and IL-6.
B cell response
•
The described cytokines provide B cell activation and differentiation signals.
•
B cells that
have combined with their respective antigens undergo clonal proliferation and differentiate into antibody-secreting plasma cells.
